News Millions of Bats are Dead from White Nose Syndrome Nearly 7 million bats have died in the Northeast over the past five years as a result of the fungal disease white nose syndrome, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Bat conservationists are concerned about the animals' possible extinction at the hands of the fungus and say that the full impact of an extinction event is unclear, but it would be very damaging to the ecosystem. 1/17/12 FDA Posts More Dog Food Recalls Related to Aflatoxin The Food and Drug Administration posted two additional recall notices Wednesday listing dry dog food brands that were recalled because of high levels of aflatoxin, a fungus found on grains such as corn that can cause liver damage. Earlier this month, Cargill Animal Nutrition said it would recall dry dog food because of excess levels of aflatoxin. 12/29/11 Sick Alaska Seals to Undergo Testing for Radiation Poisoning Scientists in Alaska will test sick seals to see if they've been affected by radiation from Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant, which began leaking radiation after an earthquake and tsunami in March.
